ANTS- can we keep a flat lawn or give up?

We have the most lumpy lawn in the world! Average about 20 ants nests per year & when we've used ant stop we just ended up with them in the house instead- any suggestions or is it time to gove up all hope of a usable garden?

last advice I heard on BBC Gardeners' World was just to stamp on them! Told Dh and he can now save hours of time and do decorating instead.
