help, i've got what look like green tomatoes on my potato plant

they look and smell like little green tomatoes...it's definitely not a tomato plant as it had desiree pots attached to the bottom...has anyone else had anything like this?

Your potato plant has flowered and produced fruits. They are related to the tomato and also deadly nightshade so don't eat them!

The fruits that is, not the potatoes which should be okay! The potatoes are the tubers which store energy for the plant to grow the following season.

shellingpeas is right, they are the potato fruit and are REALLY poisonous but the tubers will taste lovely. and yes potatoes are related to tomatoes.
So nothing new to add to SP's post - sorry! but just wanted to back them up!

I grew up in New Zealand and we used to get potato fruits on our plants frequently, which was how I knew about them - must be because it was warmer maybe? I never knew they were a rarity in the UK, I have learned something new today!

well thanks for that info, most interesting. I had never heard of it before and may have been tempted to taste any fruit i saw on my potato plant just to see what its like, but shall not bother now!

interesting that they are common in nz....it wasn't even mentionned in any of our growing veg books....glad you told me they were poisonous, i was going to see if they ripened on the windowsill! mind you atm they are very unappetising looking

and yes potatoes were great, especially as we had just thrown some that had sprouted in the pantry into the ground to see if they would do anything!
