take a cutting from an ancient Pieris - or is it easier just to by a new a baby one for £6.99 at Hayes Garden Centre

really tho - I'd like to try myself but haven't the foggiest how to go about it - all I know is you cut on a slant!(?). You seem quite knowledgeable in gardening matters so you're my first port of call

Not Hub2Dee, but I know a bit about plants ...

You can take a cutting from a pieris, the cutting needs to be about 4 - 5 inches long, at a slant if you want to but not necessarily. Stick it in a pot of general compost, water well, cover the pot with a propogator, bottom of a plastic bottle, or plastic bag, put it somewhere warm and light and keep it moist. You can use rooting hormone powder on the cutting but you don't need to.

Should start to take root within about 6 weeks.

Can the cutting be from anywhere on the plant - or is a newish bit best? (sorry if I sound thick but I am clueless in the garden!)

As far as I know, it doesn't matter. Probably would be better to use some newish growth.

I saw too late ! (I spend most of my time in my tiny uinverse of Threads I'm on. Keeps me busy enough usually).

Did the wire idea backfire ? I was trying to prevent the pot turning upsdie down and crushing all the stems with its weight.... I could see when I was threading it it might have somewhat divided the central clump... does it look OK or sh*t ? Be honest.

No, it's great, the wire worked really well (although I didn't notice it at first and couldn't work out why you seemed to have glued it into the bottom of the bottle ... I have these moments). It had a bit of compost on the stems where the postman hadn't been too careful with it and the package was a bit wet (luckily the postman's uniform will dry ) but it's travelled really well.

After I dropped it into the bottle I was wondering how you might get it out !

I love it. My dd is very excited by it too, and got quite confused when I started to attack the bottle to get it out ("Mummy, it's easy, just take the top off and pull it out through there!!").

Hi JoolsToo, really I know nothing about propagation outside the bedroom.

You may want to buy another anyway as repeated plants in the garden tends to add structure and looks better (usually) than just a bunch of different ones... but plantaholics will disagree !

Oh, it was a slightly sci-fi, slightly moralistic tale, although in my defence I was only in my 20s . Young couple go to intergalactic travel agency, can't get to Jupiter so go holidaying on the cheap to beautiful planet, destroyed by wars and famine, now recovered but ininhabited (Gaia principle, doncha know) ... naturally, it's earth ...
