Advice needed- Growing a lawn from seed.

OK, we killed off all the rubbish that was there, turned over and tamped down after having removed a good few bags of rubble like stones left here from the builders.

We sowed the seeds as per the packet instructions and there is some growth but it's very patchy.

Any ideas what we've done wrong or if there is anything we can do that will help us achieve a beautiful lawn without turfing it?

Have you used enough seed? You generally need four times the amount you think you need. Also did you cover the seed with topsoil ( or similar ) and rake it in? This also helps to stop the birds eating the seeds (pesky blighters). And it needs watering regularly but be careful not to wash the seeds away. We are trying to repair a very patchy lawn with seed so I feel your frustration!

We didn't put any topsoil on but we did rake it in. Perhaps the bits where the grass hasn't grown are bits where the birds have helped themselves? The cat is obviously not earning her keep.

We're currently watering once or twice a day, surely it can't need more?

More seed may be answer.

bung on lots of seed. also once it comes up fully it's usually surprising how much there is!
