Potato eyes anyone?

DH prepped some salad spuds the other day, removing some fairly well developed eyes! He put them in a nice pile on the table because they looked like little aliens.

After we had all admired them sufficiently he was going to chuck them, but dd and I thought we'd plant them and see what happens.

I suspect they need the actual spud in order to grow though. Anyone know?

Don't want you to go unanswered - the baby plant needs the potato to grow, as it's the primary source of nutrients. However, you could try planting the sprouts and see what happens. If your DD likes this sort of thing, you could try putting a carrot top in a shallow saucer of water - it should sprout! The same thing apparently happens with a pineapple top but I've never tried it myself.

I had a feeling the spuds would be like that; I'll try the carrot top thing too, sounds like fun. Like putting cut flowers in coloured water.

Thanks.
