Taking Gardening waste to the tip - Beginner question

I am about to do some work on all my pots, giving some to the children to plant flowers etc. They are all overgrown and I would like to start again from scratch.

Can I just take the soil and plants out of the pots and put them in the green gardening waste at the tip? or is that for plants only?

Also does hosta grow well in pots and if I grew some in pots would I have to bring them inside in winter?

Elk, I would imagine it's fine to put the soil and plants in the 'green' container at the tip - but maybe worth checking with the guys there first? Different councils may have different rules. No-one seems to bat an eyelid at my tip even when people heave in massive great tree-branches, despite signs saying you shouldn't! I've certainly lobbed in loads of soil, grass-cuttings, leaves and what-have-you (note: I do compost as much as I can at home!).

I also have a hosta in a pot and it's fine. It's been there for years (needs repotting actually ). They're notoriously attractive to slugs, so growing them in a container is probably a better way of keeping them in one piece. I keep it in a sheltered place in the winter and bung a bit of fleece round the pot, but I don't take it indoors. It seems to come up every year despite freezing temps. But you maybe need to make sure that it's a decent frost-proof pot?

Thanks,
I've got loads of frost proof pots so that will be fine, just need to wait for it to stop raining now.

I currently have about 4/5 garden waste containers to take to the tip, not including the contents of all the pots. Our compost bin is full at the moment.

I sympathise - I hate the feeling when you know you need to take a major car-load to the tip...so many more interesting things to do!

My hosta does well outside
