Local cats getting territorial in our garden

2 cats - one next door's, one I've seen around before but don't know whose - have picked today to get territorial in our garden . Heard wailing (sounded like a baby crying) and looked out to see one on the fence staring and displaying at another on our playhouse. One has now departed for now but the other is still stalking around. How can we deter them ?

Before starting want to point out I do like cats, have had them as pets in the past, so I'm not being an evil cat hater when I advise this!

We had a similar problem, but it was happening at 3 in the morning every night. We got one of those sonic noise making thingies, can't remember what they're called but they didn't work. I resorted to throwing a cup of water at them, had to do it for a few nights but they soon started to stay away, and I figured a bit of water couldn't do them any harm.

I've heard mothballs deter cats from using garden as a toilet, but you don't want to put them where children can get them.

Hope you sort it, it's an awful noise!

We used to have a prob where they woudld crap in our flower beds all the time.

I got some stuff from the garden centre. I think it's called lions roar or something which worked for us.
