Evergreen tall shrub front house privacy

Any tips on an evergreen shrub or bush which i can put at the front of the house to screen the recycling and also create privacy to onlookers?

Fast growing, not too wide and tall?

Any good ideas? x

bamboo

Choysia ternata is nice - mexican orange blossom. It's not too lazy when it gets going and smells gorgeous in summer. It's a solid shrub rather than a hedging beast so width may be a problem. There are variations on cypress that don't all want to grow into 80 feet monsters in three years and that take more kindly to pruning than a leylandii.

what is not too tall or wide?

oh yes and bamboo!

Holly (some are non prickly, eg JC can Tol), Choisya, Viburnum Tinus (flowers all winter), Eleagnus, Portuguese Laurel (and other Laurel too) and Pittosporum which also have scented flowers. All easy to prune/keep in check.
Some nice planting and screening shown here

Height up to about 8ft and width about the same as i can hack it back if it goes nuts! Thanks Fig. but I'd prefer a more bushy thing rather than bamboo (which can be a total mare).

Laurel?

tattifer · 23/03/2009 20:42

aucuba (has lovely red berries)

The ones I suggested are all quite bushy and eay to manage.
Aucuba as tattifer suggested is also easy to mange and grows in sun or deep shade.
I like this one the best
