Apart from Ivy that is. For an average sunny spot against a fence on my patio.

The ones which would do well on a sunny fence are Clematis armandii (and various other evergreen clematis if you can find them locally)

and Trachelospermum

Both haved scented white flowers though the trachelospermum flowers all summer more or less so may be your best bet.

If you want a clematis armandii get a named variety as they tend to flower better, Snowdrift and Apple Blossom are both good.

I second the traceospurnum - jasim. Scent is divine

My favourite is this one. Scented flowers followed by fruit giving longer interest. Grows easily without taking over. Easy to kill to as I discovered when my neighbour decided to kill off ivy on her side of the fence without bothering to tell me first.

My passiflora (passionflower) is evergreen. Veyr vigorous but very pretty indeed. The flowers are so intricate that they almost look fake.

slow growing, perhaps not strictly a climber and often overlooked but camellia?

or ceanothus? (sp?)

ceanothus

camellia

Brilliant. Thanks all, will investigate all your suggestions. Scented would be a nice bonus.
