Half Barrel pond

Used to have one years ago, pre DDs and it was fab.
So now DDs are here and 9,4 and 2+half, half barrels are on special offer in the garden centre- Can we have one again?
Is it still too dangerous?
Could I put wire mesh inside to stop accidents?
If so how would I fix it in place?
DDs would love to see fish but with the garden itself only just about not getting trashed anymore, I can see that the plants and any fish wouldn't last long.
Anyone got a pond or half barrel one and have advice.

believe it or not i have a canoe buried into the ground and turned it into a pond, and it looks great! i have fish, frogs living in it and in the summer lilly pads grow in it.
to keep it safe from the toddlers i have it surrounded in bushes or pots, and so far have had no problems keeping dc away from it. the word NO in a particular voice seems to do the trick
have fun setting it up!

We have a book on gardening with children (was a present!) which suggests filling up the container almost to the top with big pebbles, then planting amongst that, then adding water. You can't have fish, obviously, but frogs and dragonflies etc. would still love it - and you wouldn't need to worry about drowning...
