Weed suppressing plants for the allotment

I was reading an article in a gardening magazine that mentioned using Bugle as a weed suppressing plant that also attracts bees. I've bought some plug plants to try out but they prefer shade and I'm planning on using them to underplant raspberries and blackcurrant bushes so I'm not sure how well they'll do. Has anyone tried this before? Does it work? Are there any other plants I can try? It sounds like a good idea in theory!

Haven't done this myself so no real advice but Bugle is happy in sun as well as shade, it is easy going.

thanks pannacotta, just hoping I don't finish off the plants before I get them in the ground!
