Just planted up a new hanging basket with thyme, winter pansies, a hyacinth bulb and something else that I cant remember the name (some everygreen thing I think!). ANyway do I need to protect it from frost?? We've just had a couple of frosty nights!! Will the plants die now!! How do I protect it!! ARGH!!!

Right - I came up with a cunning plan.... as its now freeezing cold outside so no real heat to retain - I zapped a satsuma in the microwave til it was quite hot, popped it in the hanging basket. My theory is that it will retain a bit of heat and as its organic it will be OK if juice and stuff leaks out but it should warm up the area near to it (ie in the basket) then I got an old bubble wrap envelope thingy and made it into a cone shape and sellotaped it round the top of the basket(like a cone hat!). This should then help retain some of the warmth from the satsuma in th basket and thus keep it frost free!!!??

Will it work..??!!

can't you just bring it inside, instead of using microwaved satsumas?

it made me laugh thinking of little orangey hot water bottles for your plants
