Christmas tree cuttings?

Does anyone know if I can take cuttings from our Christmas tree to replant in the garden? If so, how would I go about it? Do they need to soak for a set amount of time and then straight into the ground?

I think it is possible in theory, but I have my doubts about the viability of cuttings off a tree that has been cut and then sat in a warm room for several days.

thanks neversaydie, that's sort of what I thought might be said. Maybe I'll just try a couple out and see how it goes...
