DH last summer switched on to gardening (rising food prices scared the hell out of him) and he did very well with a patch in our garden - sweet corn, broccoli, chard, carrots. He has the basic planting tools, so aside from those I wonder what would be good for this rooky?

Lots of different types of hooks. You'll be happier if you can find your tools and they don't get damaged. DH broke my spring rake by not putting up hooks when we first got together. Ex boyfriend in my old house did a fab job. Also get one or a couple of those plastic tugs to put compost, rubbish. I'm still thinking

Hooks sound good - just need to figure out where to put them. Let me know if you think of anything else - he is sooo practical - not into aesthetics.

Have you got room for a greenhouse? Or a mini-greenhouse?

Other possibilities

Cold frame
Compost bin
Worm composter
Water butt
Coir pots for growing seedlings
Good quality gardening gloves
Seed potatoes
