Has anyone ever had any success trying to grow clematis from the seed heads they produce? Surely its possible?

yes - but mine ended up self setting all over the garden like weeds...

It will probably depend on the exact variant. Some will possibly produce unviable seeds depending on the hybrid. Give it a try and see how you go.

Should i dry the seed heads out first or just plant them direct into some compost?

I think I let mine dry first - but you could experiment with some of both maybe?
