Unusual bird on our feeder just now. Large green with yellow head, red beak, long tail. Think it is a ring necked parakeet according ot dc's book. Do they normally live wild ?

Yes. There's a whole bunch of them in and aroiund Windsor. Been there years. They are breeding now.

Ecmo · 07/07/2008 18:43

they can do if they escape but I think they are often mobbed or killed by other birds.. Catch it and you might get a reward from the owner!

Sam100 · 07/07/2008 18:43

There are certainly flocks living in Kew Gardens. Did it look like this

FabioTheWhisperingCat · 07/07/2008 18:44

There are loads wild in the UK.
THere's a theory that they escaped from Pinewood Studios when they were 'props' on a Bond Movie.
Noisy feckers can fend for themselves, believe me.

VanillaPumpkin · 07/07/2008 18:45

There are loads in the South of England! Huge flock at some rugby club iirc.

hana · 07/07/2008 18:48

LIZS · 07/07/2008 18:50

andiem · 07/07/2008 18:53

there has been some debate about whether they should cull them as they are pushing out native birds but I love them

goingslowlyroundthebend · 07/07/2008 18:54

Zillions flying past my window right now - Esher. They are quite surreal. They fill a tree at the bottom of our garden everynight and squark like crazy

pigleto · 07/07/2008 18:54

My parents had an african green parrot worth hundreds of pounds living wild in and around their garden near Hull for ten years. It was eventally killed in a storm. It had escaped from its owner in gateshead and was quite famous among bird watchers.

LIZS · 07/07/2008 18:56

and now we have our resident woodpecker !

OP posts:
andiem · 07/07/2008 18:57

we have a woodpecker as well lizs and we have had loads of goldfinches this year

spicemonster · 07/07/2008 18:58

Oh god I hate them. They have the most hideous squawk. I've seen them at Richmond, Windsor and on Hampstead Heath now ...

Mercy · 07/07/2008 18:58

There's loads of them in a couple of parks in Amsterdam (Vondelpark and a smaller one)

Blu · 07/07/2008 19:03

I think there are somethng like 350,000 wild parakeets in southern England.

There are certainly a lot in S london - a common sight in Brockwell, Dulwich and Hornimann parks, anyway.

They are a significant pest and have ruined a vineyard in Kent - eaten £20,000 worth of grapes

Mercy · 07/07/2008 19:05

I've also seen a small flock of 'wild' budgies in Jubilee Gardens

Blu · 07/07/2008 19:07
Drusilla · 07/07/2008 19:07

There are lodas of them in Brighton

geogteach · 07/07/2008 19:11

surreylady · 07/07/2008 19:48

Loads too in Staines/Egham - around the river.
