ok, so the previous owners of the house look like they tried to deal with horrendous ivy on the garage but failed, so we have cut all the roots we can find, how long does it take to die am not much of a gardener really, but am curious.. horrid stuff.

We had ivy all around are back garden. After cutting out the roots, you still need to keep and eye on anything that springs up as it can be quite prolific.

We got rid of the last of it 3 years ago and I am not seeing it anymore... but still keeping my eye out for it.

I dont know why anyone would intentionally plant the nasty stuff.

We have the same problem - diabolical stuff, completely shredded our garage roof. Last year in a fit of pique dh ripped loads off, took most of the house paint with it - and it's still going strong, bloody aerial roots.

Nice lady at the garden centre advised cutting into the roots in the ground and the putting paraffin on to kill the plant all the way up, then brushing the roots off the walls with a wire brush - or you could wait a couple of years for the dead leaves to drop off of their own accord.

On the other hand I had great success ripping it all off a side fence, hacking it as low down as I could and tying a bin liner round it for a couple of weeks to rot the stumpy bit off.

Hasn't come back yet!
