My neighbour calls it inch a day a sit grows so much.

I've got lots of this. I think it is pretty but it can get out of hand easily. Cut it back really short every autumn.
Mine doesn't reroot though.

does it look a bit like bamboo but with bigger heart shaped leaves - that would be japanese knotweed

There's a thing called Russian Knapweed which looks like thistles - that's pretty invasive. It can spread by seed but also be a spreading root system. Could it be that?
