Garden Room

Can anyone recommend a garden room/big shed I can hide from my family in? My husband has retired really early, 20 something daughter is still living at home and while I love them dearly I need some space.

I’d love to do something like a little library room, with a desk so I can just hangout and read/work. But everything I see online is so expensive.

If you have one what works and what doesn’t? What would you change?

So any recommendations or ideas welcome! Thanks :)

What's your budget? Timber is expensive now (compared to 10 years ago) so any new shed/structure will be pricey. Second hand ones are available though.

Are you planning to use it year round? Maybe a potting shed would work if you're not using it in the winter? More glass and light.

Budget can be up to £5k I think. I will be using it in the winter so I think it will need to be insulated, I guess that could push the price up a lot?

Second hand and being will to dismantle massively reduced the prices. If you're near Berkshire there's this for £500

My budget is much smaller than yours but I'm quite resourcefulness. Really depends what you want. Full project management? Custom design? Second hand or brand new?

Sadly nowhere near but thanks ever so much. I’ll have a look on my local FB Marketplace, I didn’t think to look there 🤦🏻‍♀️

I was looking at the Dunster house ones which are about £2k. But I’m not sure if they are any good. Nothing super fancy or custom. I don’t mind painting it, and I could probably cobble some insulation together to keep the price down.

Sorry for my typos, I'm sure you got the gist. Sorry, not sure about Dunster House. Reading reviews, it might be cheap because the wood isn't great quality? You could also retrofit insulation, those PIR panels are very convenient. Of course it does reduce your indoor space a bit but that's a good excuse to buy a bigger one.

You'll definitely get more for your money second hand but don't forget the transport costs if you don't have access to a van/trailer.

A relative had one which was bought as a kit and had a handyman put it together. I don't think it had insulation, so they needed to leave a small heater on ALL year around to stop mould! It lasted about 5yrs before a storm blew the roof off because the handyman hadn't added specific strapping which tethers the roof down!

We have a large shed in our garden, but its been built more as a home office/garden room. Its 2m from each fence and the roof ridge is less than (I think) 2.3m which meant we didn't need to get planning permission. Check your local council on requirements. We are having electrics, heating, wifi and also a toilet/sink put in. Its not completed yet. Its to store work tools, lawnmower etc but if needed, could be used to work from. We are renovating anyway and thought its better to make if future proof, rather than just having a little wooden shed that couldn't be used for anything other than tool storage.

Brilliant! Thanks for the tips, it wouldn’t occur to me to have the roof strapped down and we are in the windy Fens so a must have LOL!

I hope you enjoy your new room when it’s up, it sounds amazing :)
