I should know what this is but I can’t remember! And my plant app is unreliable.

It’s very invasive, all over my garden.

Comfrey - makes a very good liquid fertiliser. Pull/dig it up as roots aren't too deep.

Is it blue alkanet?

B0D · 04/10/2026 16:52

if it has very deep tap roots

Seaitoverthere · 04/10/2026 19:44

Toss up between comfrey and blue alkanet but I think it might be the latter.

KeziaOAP · 04/10/2026 19:53

I have comfrey and blue alkanet both Borage family, flowers of comfrey hang down like bells, alkanet has open flowers like large forget me not.

Maggiethecat · 04/10/2026 22:18

Aaah! Blue alkanet I think although I’ve grown borage too.

Comfrey, green alkanet or borage. Borage has softer leaves and doesn't have as deep roots. Green alkanet and comfrey both have deep taps roots and bristly leaves, but green alkanet are the roughest. Given the size of the leaves and the white spots I think it is green alkanet. (Pentaglottis sempervirens)

ChocolateApples · 11/10/2026 23:09

My vote is for alkanet. It's a pain, it's all over my garden.

Harrysmummy246 · 15/10/2026 14:01

Definitely green alkanet. (I know, the flowers are blue, but apparently it's called green alkanet)

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 15/10/2026 14:11

I'd say Green Alkanet (which, before I'm shot down, randomly has bright blue flowers).

Webbedlife · 20/10/2026 23:17

It's definitely Green Alkanet. It's most similar looking to comfrey when not in flower but the difference is those faint spots on the leaves when you zoom in on the picture. It is a nuisance.I can't get rid of it from my front garden as the tap roots are embedded between paving slabs.

Maggiethecat · 20/10/2026 23:23

I reckon it must be good for making feeds like comfrey tea. I’ll chuck them in a bucket and leave them to get smelly!

Yes, mine is rooted between the stones of the 200yold retaining wall under the hedge.
It's great for pollinators so I think I'll just keep reminding it to stay in the wild side and try to get on top of the inner areas
