Hi after a very rubbish try for strawberries in my new trug I want to try something else (veg) that would be more successful . Any ideas ?

Why/in what way were your strawberries not successful?

ThaneOfGlamis · 26/07/2026 21:33

You should be able to grow any veg in it, short of trees. I used to have one and did find it very dry though. Water just poured straight through.

5 strawberries ! Followed all guidance and watered and fed

If this is the first year you’ve put them in then you might not get a very big crop, strawberries do better in the second year.

Also it could be that the birds (pigeons) are getting them before you are. They will take them unripe.

if you want to start from seeds now, radish, spring onion, lettuce, dwarf beans, beetroot, turnip can all be started now (if it’s hot where you all it might be worth waiting a couple of weeks before you start lettuces.

We have had great success over the years with lettuces. Rocket this year and spinach. Courgettes will retake over the world if given the chance (although too late this year).

Were your strawberries new plants ? If so a poor yield in first year is quite common , they will be better next year unless you’ve dumped them

I don’t think the weather conditions have been too good for strawberries.Id continue to look after them up and wait till next year.
If you’ve dumped them, then try carrots. I grow mine in large raised planters, very successfully.

@cleo333 When did you plant the strawberries in it?

JennyForeigner · 27/07/2026 22:06

Cherry tomatoes?

cleo333 · 28/07/2026 21:30

Is there anything I can plant now ?
