You’re planting them too close together. You should thin them out a few weeks after they start growing so they’re about 5cm apart.

Oh I grew some like that a few years ago. Gave up and didn't try again. I assumed I hadn't given them enough water. Sorry not a decent answer . You have my commiserations, it's annoying isn't it?

😢poor little unwanted carrots. Do you know any guineas or rabbits they would love them

DallasMajor · 26/07/2026 13:29

Made me laugh. Chop them up and don't tell them.

I thought it was because the soil was stoney

KnickerlessParsons · 26/07/2026 13:32

Sometimes they grow wonky if thr ground has lots of stones in it.
You could make carrot soup, or carrot mash and no one will know what shape the carrots are.

HookLineandStinker · 26/07/2026 13:50

I think that can happen when the soil is rich, as well as stony.

I tried growing some in large pots of compost one year and they were a disaster 🤣. Now I grow them in our poor, sandy soil, well thinned out and they are much more presentable 🥕

Carrots do this when the soil has too many nutrients e.g. you've put manure on your veg patch.

Carrots prefer nutrient poor soil.

Grow them in toilet rolls! Plant the whole toilet roll into the ground once they're underway. The cardboard will biodegradable.
