Climbing rose help 🙏

Hello! Wondering if any lovely climbing rose experienced growers can give me some advice. I have a big old climber against a fence, but it's so so tall, way above the fence. I suspect a mme Alfred Carriere or very similar.
It looks so unsupported and top heavy, it's literally reaching for the heavens and about to break free of what support it has. I know pruning for climbing roses is different but my question is, how hard can I cut it back in order to train new growth along the fence. It's too unruly and menacing to just train as it is.
It has a bit of leaf discoloration and it can't be happy, but it does flower well and for a really long period. I deadhead and 3 or 4 buds come back. I just can't reach the ones up in the gods and would like more fence coverage and support. Thanks in advance!

It's hard to see how tall it reaches but it must be 10-12 feet in places if not more.

Now is not the best time to do hard structural pruning, so can you reinforce the supports at all? You might have issues when (if!) it rains and the wet flowers puts additional weight on it.

Early next February, maybe reduce half the branches to about waist height and take the top out of the rest, as that will encourage more growth low down, and you can also get rid of any branches which are dead, damaged or rubbing against one another. The following year you can reduce the other half of the branches.

Lots of dead stuff in there, so good to know. I might be able to wrangle in even more support if I can get rid of that and prune/cut back a bit. Thanks again!

It does look like Mme Alfred Carriers and if so is a very vigorous rose to keep to a 6' fence. I look after one on the gable end of a barn and even that's a struggle sometimes. Definitely look at taking out older stems in the winter but also look up 'niffing' as a way of training as practiced by the gardener Jennie Barnes.

Yes! That's what I thought, the rose is too big, it wants a big side of a house or something similar. Thank you, that is great advice, I heard of niffing a long time ago and think it was somewhere in the back of my head in order to train it, but couldn't remember anything about it, now I know what to research! More than anything I want to be able to reach spent blooms to deadhead and to offer it some direction and support. I appreciate more knowledgeable advice as googling is just confusing!

We have one of these a year old and it has already covered the entire arbour we aim to hard prune ours back every January
