Indoor gardening

I've moved into an apartment with no balcony or outdoor space and I'm really missing the garden. Any inspiration for indoor gardening welcome.

What kind of space do you have? What is the orientation of various windowsills? Can you zone a room or the hallway for themes?

I’d try something very basic eg herbs on the kitchen windowsill. Parsley, come-and-come-again lettuce. supermarkets sell potted herbs.

I don’t know much about houseplants, but aren’t there are some that improve air quality eg spider plants?

begonias and orchids will give a splash of colour.

Don’t forget hyacinth bulbs for the winter. Also you can have some fun, and delicious additions to salads, by sprouting various seeds.

Get a hydroponic kit, you can grow all sorts in them either fully to fruit or start them off and transplant into soil and a sunny window spot once plants are big enough.

I have always toyed with the idea of an orchidarium to grow miniature and rare orchids.

Some outdoor annuals can work well indoors and stop you getting bored of the same plants year round. I'm growing morning glory and thunbergia around my bedroom window, trained up strings so they frame the view. They've been slower to flower than the outdoor ones but they're just getting going now and are a treat to wake up to. I think nasturtiums would work well too.
