How to clean shears?

I really like my shears but i have xero clue about how to clean them, or to give them some TLC…
How do you look after yours? Thanks

Are they Niwaki secateurs? They offer a sharpening service for £18. Otherwise I'd get one of their Clean Mates and a sharpening stone. If they are rusty a very fine wire wool should shift it.

I take mine into the kitchen and give them a good scrub with washing up liquid and a scourer. Rinse well, towel dry, then spray the blades and hinge generously with WD40 and open-and-shut them several times to ensure it gets well into the works.

I used vinegar to clean some very old ones that had been neglected, steeped them for about 30 min, used some wire wool to scrub them (repeated this step for the really rough ones), rinsed with water, dried and coated with wd40. I had originally been cleaning a very rusty cast iron Dutch oven so went looking for other bits to clean while I had the bucket of vinegar available, so satisfying.
