Best smelling plants for summer?!

Shinyandnew1 · 20/06/2026 20:05

I already have two different roses (one is actually quite a disappointing smell!), a vanilla Nemesia that smells amazing, Honeysuckle (not flowering yet), jasmine (not flowering any more) and would like some more bits that smell heavenly! I think the best smell at the moment is the flowers on the Cordyline (it took me ages to realise that’s what I can smell!)

Any other suggestions would be much appreciated!

Phlox

I would plant as many honeysuckles as you can fit in. Great scent. Korresia is a good scented yellow rose and my wedding day is amazing just now though not a repeat flowerer

You can’t beat some of the David Austin roses for scent, climbers Wollerton Old Hall and The Generous Gardener spring to mind. Olivia Austin is pretty special too. Go along to a garden centre and have a sniff.

Lavender is always a good one too

I have star jasmine over an arch that smells amazing right now.

Another David Austin Rose for the smells great list is The Poet's Wife, lovely pale yellow flowers with a strong lemony scent.

Camomile is great in a pot by the door as it wafts asnice strong scent every time you brush by it.

Gardenias. I have some which are quite hardy. Nothing special until they flower, then glorious.

My favourite but I can't keep them alive!!

Jasmine and mock orange- both in flower at the moment and smell amazing! Plus lavender and lilies. I also grow sweet peas every year for their scent but they’re obvious more efforts than the others.

Have you tried gardenia summer snow? It survived -17 degrees in a pot in my garden this winter.

As houseplants I struggle with them too. But outside they've been fine.

Mock Orange is stunning

TheeNotoriousPIG · 21/06/2026 10:03

Chocolate cosmos smells divine!

Also, Agastache, which smells of mint, and is brilliant for pollinators.

If you have room then Rambling Rector smells divine or Cecile Brunner - both climbing roses.

evilharpy · 21/06/2026 10:13

Sweet peas

dotdotdotdash · 21/06/2026 10:14

Oh and lilac. It's a short flowering season but I enjoy them every year for the scent.

Sweet peas

Yes, my favourite scented flower . I was away for a week , my sweetpeas had all gone to seed . After cutting these off it is back to beautiful scented flowers again.
And jasmine ( I think "Clotted Cream" ) is flowering and gorgeous .

I don't like honeysuckle or lavender . Not a fan of roses , but my newly relocated climbing rose is going great guns and flowering .

Dianthus (pinks)
Heliotrope (an annual)
Some bearded irises
Some petunias (particularly the blue ones)

ChipswithMayonnaise · 21/06/2026 22:33

Nicotiana.

MIAMNER · 21/06/2026 22:53

salvia nachtvlinder - the foliage smells so good I’m always running my hands through it. It’s also a great companion plant for roses as it prevents black spot.

Thesafetygeneral · 21/06/2026 22:55

Jasmine, loves hear though so I think you should always plant near a boiler a warm outlet x

Can vouch for Generous Gardener! Bought it as bare root last year and it was slow to grow but this year I’ve had quite a few blooms.

It’s the lovely pale pink one in this arrangement.

That’s good to know! I have that Salvia near my Generous Gardener rose.

Which are both near the mock orange.

It’s great sensory pleasure at the moment, have been having meals in the garden.😊

Night scented stock

Agree, it’s really gorgeous on a still summer evening.

ElliePhant28 · 22/06/2026 17:36

Mock orange makes my mouth water, but it’s got such a short life.
Jasmine - my south facing one is about to bloom, yet my neighbour has a north west facing one which has been blooming for weeks. I’ve got 5 of them dotted around the garden. I love them.
Winter flowering honeysuckle is amazing and very lovely beside the front door in mid-winter. If you have space, get one!

It’s weird because I remember last year it only flowered for about a week but this year it’s been going a couple of weeks and not done.

Not complaining though as I’m sitting near the open doors and the smell is wafting in!
