Hydrangea flowers with two types of petals

I have a hydrangea Ayesha, it’s has very characteristic flowers that look like lilac’s. Since last year it is also producing some standard, mop head hydrangea flowers. Why is this happening? I don’t mind it but I hope they won’t take over the whole plant.

That's weird. I think it must be a genetic thing where it's reverted back to the standard species? It's really cute though to have both types and unusual. I guess you just have to see if it does it more!

I only know that you can get it to change colour with different soil.

It looks lovely though your one. Mine is mophead and very bright pink.

Oh wow! thank you @EleanorMc67! How interesting. I wonder what my Ayesha will do in future? Will Joseph Banks fully win? :)
@BillieWiper thank you, it is indeed really pretty. Some years it is more a lavender colour, but this year all my hydrangeas decided to be more pink, or red even, despite repeated application of the pH changing product (forgot the name). I actually don’t mind it! I don’t like it when they are bright pink, but violet and lavender are lovely. This is my Endless Summer blue (with a white one in the middle):

Maybe tie something round the stems of all the flowers coming up wrong. Then later in the year you can remove those branches.

That’s a good idea, @OutOfApricots! I’ll try that.
