We have a small patch of not-even-really-garden at the front of our house - about 10m wide by 1m deep. Nothing grows in it properly as the soil quality is dreadful, and I'm sick of dealing with the weeds, so I've decided to gravel over it and have some nice potted plants instead.

Can anyone recommend me some gravel that would look super here? I really liked the Italian Rose chippings but we're going to need 3 x 850kg bags, and the cost is eyewatering. Any suppliers or style recommendations gratefully appreciated.

Are you sure you’ve got your calculations right for that? Seems an awful lot of gravel you’re suggesting.

Google says around 60kg non driveway applications per m2. So around 600kg surely in your case?

Well that's what I thought, but the contractor recommended 3 850kg bags. I'll have a proper measure. It's definitely about 10m - no more than 12 to be sure, and about a metre depth (definitely no more than 1.5m), and we'd want gravel to the depth of 5cm.

It definitely becomes more affordable if we only need 1 850kg bag!

Hmm strange.

I did a pretty big gravel path job a couple years back- I’d say at least double your area. We ordered 2 bulk bags and didn’t get through the whole lot- had about half a bag left over which got donated to various family and friends.

Travis Perkins do some nice decorative stuff, you’ll probably find local landscaping centres will come in cheaper than them.

Thank you - I've just measured it and it's 8.8m x 1.3m.

Some stone merchants have materials calculators on their website - I would put your measurements in one to get a better idea of quantities.
I can't remember off the top of my head the specific company I used when I was ordering gravel/pebbles but I definitely used the online calculator they had. Or you could ring and ask their advice?

I would ring a local landscaping supplier, tell them the m2 and depth you’d like, and see what they say.

Thanks. Recommendations of suppliers and types of gravel also appreciated!

Wow - the Italian Rose Chippings are lovely! They look like quartz, which probably explains why they're quite expensive. Very pretty though.

I love Cotswold stone.

We bought this from these guys. They were very helpful, the guy who delivered was also very helpful, and we love it. It looks really warm and Mediterranean in the sun and goes a lovely deep tan when it's wet. I'll post a couple of pics too. Just took these pics right now! Garden very much a work-in-progress. www.gravelmaster.co.uk/products/garden-chippings/p/golden-gravel-10mm
