Anyone planted a large Lavender bank?

Moved house recently and the front aspect is all day sun. There is a low brick wall that will be perfect for retaining heat so it’s a perfect place for it. I’ve never done it before so does anyone have tips?

Don’t plant the plants too close together. They spread out very quickly!
Use English lavender, not the more showy French one, e.g Hidcote.

I planted a lavender hedge grown from cuttings so it was free. The only issue for me was not pruning enough so it’s a bit woody. But if you check when’s best and put an annual reminder in your calendar you can keep on top of it. Make sure the soil is free draining as they don’t like wet feet over winter.

Thanks! I did see the English variety is hardy which is what I’ll need for this spot. Was thinking 30cm apart for a hedge look?

@DoverWighti was going to mound the area up a bit and use some horticultural sand too?

Yes to English & sand sounds good.

Hidcote is fabulous. Anything I’ve ever bought from Hidcote itself has romped away and been super healthy, so if you are anywhere near it’s worth a visit

Ooohh @whereistheheatwaveits not far from me, is it definitely worth visiting just to buy the plants from there?

Actually now doing some more research and Vera looks better for the height I need.

How deep will it be? I’m thinking about how you will get into prune. I have just replanted my lavender hedge, it was too leggy and woody, but also was about ten + years old! I adore lavender, and now that there is so much heat I’m thinking of a Rosemary ‘ bank ‘ too, which I’ve not done before. You could potentially mix the two.. super aromatic!
