Thanks all. I don’t use the plant ID apps because they’re so often wrong. They just work by finding photos on the internet that are similar and so they do offer ridiculous suggestions. i also now want a Patagonian sausage tree!

@Aleiha Ah, now I do genuinely have a pomegranate tree. Well, I say tree - it's about a foot high and on my kitchen windowsill. Last year it produced one fruit about the size of a ping pong ball, bless it.

@Aleiha By the way, by sheer random chance (or is it inspired genius?) I have just done a search on trees and shrubs native to Patagonia and to my amazement, guess where berberis darwinii comes from?!!😮

So I think that from now on, we can safely rename berberis darwinii the Patagonian sausage tree after all.😂😂😂
