No, it’s a knapweed. A perennial.

No, it’s a knapweed. A perennial.

It's the wrong colour for common knapweed (photo below) - that's reddish pinky purple, cornflower is bright or dark blue https://www.plantlife.org.uk/plants-and-fungi/common-knapweed/

However, knapweed and cornflower are both in the Centaurea genus aka the knapweed family. They are Centaurea nigra and Centaurea cyanus. So all cornflowers are knapweeds - but not all knapweeds are cornflowers. It could also be Centaurea montana, I can't really tell the difference from the OP's photo, so this is from Wikipedia:

"[C. montana] may be distinguished from the cornflower, Centaurea cyanus, by having a single (rarely up to three) flower heads, and by its being perennial, whereas the cornflower has many flower heads and is annual."

I think it is out of the Mondays family.

FizzingAda · 18/05/2026 16:07

Yes. I have it my garden, it seeds everywhere. Beware if you plant it, it grows quite spread out and can flop, over other plants, shading them out. I usually have to pull some of it up, but it always comes back. Pretty though, a love.y blue

Knittedfairies2 · 18/05/2026 16:20

It looks like a perennial cornflower.

Tel12 · 18/05/2026 16:23

Centaurea - it's in the same family as cornflower. It's a perennial so will come back year after year.

Agree with the Centaurea ID.The best thing about it is that it smells beautifully of tinned peaches.

Try it and report back. 😄
