Specimen shrub recommendations for a sunny exposed spot

I had a beautiful Berberis but it has lost all its leaves and died. I need something to replace it. It needs to be able to cope with full sun, exposure and be drought tolerant. I'd ideally like something evergreen. It would be good if it was a bit special because it's in a central part of the garden and is a bit of a focal point.

Mahonia. Green holly-like leaves, yellow flowers in the winter, blue berries in the spring.

Hibiscus, sambucus nigra, viburnum snowball (deciduous), choisya (evergreen), or cordyline and palms if you prefer a different look
