Dicksonia Antartica - does this look ok?

Just got a 1ft Dicksonia Antartica, had it about a week and a half, it has about 3 ‘old’ fronds on but I can’t see anything new forming as yet. I’ve been looking after it as advised with daily watering. Just wondered if this is normal? It’s in a big pot. Am I worrying prematurely? Pics included

It looks fine. It clearly isn't dead because of all the green growth, it probably just needs some time ro get going.

I think because I spent a lot on it, I’m a bit worried, but yes, as it has the older green fronds on it’s a good sign. Hopefully in the coming wks it may start to show signs of new ‘fiddleheads’.

This is what mine looks like at the moment, you can see the furry curls (I’m sure someone will be along with the correct term) which will be this year’s fronds.

I feel the head of mine for its babies, you will be able to feel the lumps as they grow.

Its likely just settling after a change of location/pot etc etc. May ask where you bought it OP? I'm looking at getting one.

SockFluffInTheBath · 15/04/2026 16:05

@7238SM I'm not the OP but i got mine from Crocus.

@SockFluffInTheBath wow, yours looks amazing, mine doesn’t look like that, mine looks ‘empty’ (like proper empty- like a vase!) apart from the 3 green fronds that are there.

I am watering it everyday unless it rains, at the crown, that’s right isn’t it? And because I have it in a pot, the water runs almost black!

@7238SM i got mine from Hillside Exotic Gardening, which I have to say have the best customer service, I have reached out to them with my concern & they got back to me straight away. They have very good reviews.

I’m guessing it’s just a waiting game, hopefully I’ll see something new happening in a few weeks or so. It’s just with everything else in the garden ‘waking’ up, I’m thinking this isn’t showing any signs of anything yet! But yeah it’s still early days, new location like @7238SM said so fingers crossed it will show me I’ve worried for nothing!

@seeyouyesterday mine was about a metre tall when I got it so it’s a bit chunkier already. When it came it looked dead as you like and I was on the verge of complaining to the company but then it sprang into life in the May.

I’m not watering mine at the moment and cover the top if there will be rain then a sharp frost. It’s planted though so I can’t move it undercover for the cold nights. When I do water I do the sides as well as the crown. It’s such a lovely thing to have in a shady spot.

Update - ok so these are the updated photos. Still an empty crown. Just nothing. Should I still be a bit worried?

Mine still looks like that - I'm in the North West ...I'm going to have a proper furtle tonight and see if anything is appearing. A seaweed feed (or other feed) is also good for it this time of year.

seeyouyesterday · 27/04/2026 18:05

Yeah I’m in Yorkshire. I’ve reached out to the seller & sent photos, they assured me (again!) that the plant is viable, I do trust them & I have to say they have been brilliant at replying & advising me. I don’t think I have fretted over a plant as much! Probably because of how much it cost! I really do hope it comes good in a couple of months & proves me wrong but at least the seller is aware of my concerns & has photos.

How much did you pay for this?
It’s got a very tiny trunk so the fronds will be small unfortunately.
The ‘trunk’ grows an inch or two a year at most 😔
and you’ve basically got a baby that will take tens if not more of years to grow into a decent size plant 😔

seeyouyesterday · 07/05/2026 15:57

@Flowersandfauna sorry I just realised I hadn’t replied, paid £80 that’s probably why I’m anxious about the lack of new growth! Anyway, still very empty crown, no ‘knuckles’ nothing at all happening. Must learn to be more patient!
