Spring bulb panic, can anyone reassure me?!

I ordered my spring bulbs (tulips, crocus, narcissus, daffs, some anemones that were always a risk) very late in November because I’d forgotten. The arrived first week of December and I’d saved a whole weekend for pulling up dead things and planting new. Then first 2 year old and then me came down with some sort of flu/covid/virus, both in bed over a week and no energy for much longer, then Christmas and now it’s been weeks and still nothing planted.

Will they be ok if I plant this week? I’m in Berkshire where it’s relatively mild and my garden is sheltered and generally warm. Everything’s going in pots or planters. I’ve got loads and it wasn’t cheap but it’s feeling like a big job, I could use some bolstering if it’s going to be futile!

You can plant them, they just may not bloom this spring but next spring instead.

Yes they’ll probably bloom this year but late.

Mine are hopefully going in tomorrow, so I can claim that at least it was December.

I thought the latest advice was to wait until December before planting to avoid ‘tulip fire’. Mine going into pots tomorrow - too damned cold today!

BuffaloCauliflower · 27/12/2025 19:55

Well I’ve never heard of tulip fire but I’ll take that! It’s pretty darn cold (correctly for December) all week here but I’ll just have to brave it

Thanks! I’ll give it a go. We only moved in 2024 so still learning this garden and didn’t plant anything for spring last year. Maybe I’ll be lucky. Maybe I’ll plant some later flowering things in the same pot
