Anyone know why my magnolia tree is covered in ants? Furthermore, will they damage the tree?

get an insect sticky band thing and put it round the trunk after dusk, when the ants should be tucked up in bed, and this should stop them the next day.

Don't know, probably after stick nectar? Or aphids milk?
