Cats, squirrels and weeds!

Any advice on how to stop cats pooing, squirrels digging and weeds growing in our borders?
I am not big on gardening, but we have just spent days sorting out the garden, which is pretty full of plants - mature shrubs, perenials mainly - and are wondering what we can do.
Are bark chippings any good?

Well, I wish I knew the answer too! There are 3 cats next door, and one semi-resident squirrel.

Apparently bark chippings are irresistible to cats & cat poo (I think I saw this on another thread)

This weekend I planted my summer bedding with the following armoury: spiky twigs (so nowhere for cats to sit); Organic 6X fertiliser (they don't like the smell - allegedly); and a thorough squirting of cat repellent. And I'm not refilling the peanut feeder for a while so our local squirrel gets used to going elsewhere for a bit.

I'll report back if all this actually works!

Thanks! We have tried planting kebab sticks to stop the cats and it worked fairly well - perhaps I should try this again!

What about that plastic(?) sheeting stuff - has anyone tried that around well-established plants?
