I have a very very neglected weed filled garden. If I attack it with Roundup, how long before I can plant anything else in it?

In theory you can clear the topgrowth once it's wilted and plant what you like, as the roots should be dying by then - whether that works or not very much depends on what weeds you have. Bind weed, ground elder, brambles, creeping thistle, hogweed and rosebay willow herb (amongst others) are all pretty persistent and will almost certainly need more than one treatment before they'll realise they're meant to be dead - they also all have deep and/or brittle root systems (if you try to dig them out chances are you'll leave bits of root behind, which will regrow... although that also depends on your soil, as roots come out of sandy stuff a LOT easier than out of clay).

So it kind of depends on what weeds you've got and how much of a weed-free result you want.
