When to cut hydrangea?

I have a hydrangea in a pot that I’ve had for years. It’s very tall but thin, and I want it to bush out more so becomes wider rather than taller. Should I cut it right back, and when should I do that? The leaves are all starting to brown off now. (I am no gardener 🤣)

I’d leave it until spring, the flowers protect the tips of the plant in winter

My gardener cuts them back in spring. Also feed with phostrogen (same as other woody plants).

My gardener told me to leave it till the spring. If you cut it back the frost can get in.

Thank you, will wait until spring!
