Something (birds?) eating tomato seedlings

We just planted out our cherry tomato seedlings (and basil) into hanging baskets and hung them up at the weekend. Within 24 hours all the tops of the tomato seedlings were gone. Since they are several feet off the ground, we are assuming it is birds. Our other hanging baskets with baby fuscias and geraniums haven't been touched. I have a few more seedlings ready for planting out now - how can I stop whatever it is from finishing off these ones too?

I've got the same problem and I'm getting one of those cheap plastic greenhouses to protect seedlings until they are bigger. Can't think of another way.

A flock of sparrows have ravaged my lettuce and something (? slugs) is eating my basil too. So far the toms have escaped, but you have my sympathy. I strung old CDs from strings dangling over one of my veg patches when the birds were a problem and that seemed to do the trick. Must go & do the same over the lettuces - what's left of them.
