Are coffee grounds a good slug deterent?

Have scattered some cofee grounds around my beans and peas, will this keep the slugs and snails at bay?

It works around my hostas - but you do have to put it in quite a wide band

I've scattered it a bit randomly on my raised beds, and so far slugs haven't been too much of a problem. of course that could be the slug pellets too Or the fact that the local cats are digging up the seedlings before the slugs even find them...
