Hi all. My first year trying to buy bulbs and I fear I may have already gone awry!

I've bought a box of 100 (!!) bulbs from Tesco and it says you should plant them immediately but I'm worried there are things in there (tulips for instance) that everything else says you should wait until later in the autumn to plant. I will have to do them all in pots.

It contains
20 Muscari Latifolium
5 Nectaroscordum Siculum
10 Tulipa triumph
30 Allium pink
30 Iris hollandica Frans Hals
5 Narcissus large cupped Sealing Wax

Those seasoned gardeners among you, how would you go about this? Any advice on timings and arrangements would be hugely appreciated!

Are they bagged separately? Hopefully yes. Take them out of the outer bag and lay out somewhere cool and dry like a shed or garage - not indoors. Tulips are best planted later in November onwards. Ideally the others would be planted straight away but as long as you don't keep them cool and dry you're ok for a while. I'd look up the height, spacing, flowering time, colours and preferred position and write it on each bag with Sharpie, assuming you have got that information on the packaging. I'd plant each variety in a large clump rather than dotty around otherwise the effect will be lost. Bare in mind Narcissus foliage is scruffy after flowering, but you need to leave it on, so think about planting behind other plants which come up later and will hide it.

Thanks so much. All v helpful. No info at all given on the packaging which is v annoying! I will start some googling... Would you try for layers of bulbs in one pot? I'm not sure if that's a bit ambitious for someone just starting out?

You could put the Tulips under the Muscari in a pot, with perhaps the Narcissus in between but with only 5 it might look a bit mean, so you might need to buy some more! Allium pink isn’t very helpful, is it!
