Spring bulb lasagne - too early for tulips?

NecklessMumster · 30/08/2025 18:05

I've just received my bulbs from Farmer Gracy that I ordered for a bulb lasagne: tulips, hyacinth, and anemones.
I did this from a kit last year which turned out great so I thought I'd try and pick my own this year, but Im no expert.
I think you're supposed to plant bulbs as soon as they arrive? But also advice says don't plant tulips til Oct/Nov?? When should I do this?

They'll be fine for a while if you keep them somewhere cool. Definitely do not plant yet as we need frost to reduce the chance of tulip fire. My garden had that in one area last year, might as well have just burnt the money

Thank you, I'll resist the urge to get it done and see how Oct goes, who knows if it'll be cold then tho 🤔

Get chicken wire too - squirrels had about £60 of bulbs in my garden last year 😡

NecklessMumster · 30/08/2025 19:01

Oh no! Even in a pot?

Especially the pots! Little bugger picked out every anemone blanda that was chosen to underplant a load of white tulips and they had about 3/4 of those. They also stole all my iris Pauline, and just left me with daffs. Going to crimp the chicken wire over the pots until they start to grow and also lay squares of it in my beds. I will NOT be beaten this year.

I must have been lucky last year. I did have the pot by the front door and don't think our squirrels have ventured that close (yet)

The squirrels dont cone near the front as DDog, also know Barky McBarkface, would definitely get them there.

I planted my bulb lasagna in the first day of December last year avd it turned out really well.

I'm itching to plant them now they're here but will resist ( and then prob forget to do it). I also read a wet spring can cause tulip fire

How deep a pot do you use for the bulb lasagne?
Ive just had loads of bulbs delivered from a deal through money saving expert and wanted to do this

NecklessMumster · 01/09/2025 15:42

Mine wasn't massive, maybe 30cm wide, 24 in deep? Depending if you're doing 2 layers or 3?

Think a couple of mine were about the same.

And ours. Little fuckers. It really annoys me having to put chicken wire on my pots.

Why did they send me tulip bulbs out if too early to plant tho? is it because they sell out?

To do with when they lift, when they send everything else out so have staff etc.
Less efficient to have them back again for a different crop

Thanks. The gardener on Instagram I follow said 'don't plant tulips until you need to wear a big coat outside ' 😊

Ahha. I'm curious which gardener now. I'm a gardener. I am on Instagram. It wasn't me 😂

Have your tried Monty’s tip about grating a bit of a soap bar in with the tulip bulbs when you plant them to disguise the scent from squirrels?
