Damsons and apples everywhere

So many damsons. I stewed them yesterday and all the kids said they didn't like them. What can I do with them? Any ideas about stewing them with another stronger fruit that might mask the plummy flavour?! Also we have an apple tree (i am new to all this fruit tree ownership). Can I ask daft questions. Do you wait for the fruit to fall or can i pick apples? And can i stew apples without peeling as I simply can't bear thought of peeling all these apples! Sorry to sound moany. I am very lucky to own fruit trees but don't have much time for all the fruit prep, especially if everyone turns their noses up!!

Crumbles. No child turns down a crumble.

discontinued !!

Hence why my post says available on Amazon for similar price. 😊

OP, this damson almond crumble from Nigel Slater is delicious (scroll down; it’s the second recipe). I don’t think he bothers with stoning them. The apple crisp sounds good too but I’ve not made it.

Nigel Slater: Absolutely topping

Nothing smells better than an autumn crumble made with hot fruit and warm spices - served with a jug of cream. Nigel Slater thinks he's died and gone to heaven.

Do not eat the damsons. You will become very drunk.

If you stone the damsons before making the alcohol, you can use them in various festive treats like alcoholic flapjacks, muffins, cakes etc etc etc. Once the alcohol is strained out, use instead of raisins [but reduce the liquid in the recipe].

Damson jelly is lovely. Better than jam as you can ditch the fiddly stones!

Damson gin or vodka is absolutely delicious. We made damson vodka with all the windfalls and vodka from Lidl. Just chucked the damsons in large jars, poured in the vodka and left it till Christmas. It tasted like a very expensive liqueur.

Don't forget the sugar though!

Damson Gin, Jam and Chutney are the best!
A warning on the apples: unless you sprayed them or used a trap you're likely to have the odd worm (or in my case, nearly every apple has one..) so I wouldn't plan to cook whole. I peel, chop and freeze, ready for a year of quick pies and crumbles. Put the radio on and zone out while you peel!
