Hello we’ve moved into a house with masses of unlevel crazy paving ( annoying ) . In between the cracks now there is a thick type of grass like plant coming up but it seems to come from bulbs ( see pictures ) any idea what it is as it’s very thick and strong ?

No pictures...?

Do the leaves smell of onions? Could be chives.

menopausalmare · 03/08/2025 14:20

Could be a bulb? Like grape hyacinth.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 03/08/2025 14:22

Grape hyacinth was my first thought too. The foliage is just the right shade of green to be that.

slightlydistrac · 03/08/2025 15:49

I think grape hyacinths too. They are a nuisance when they get into paving.

cleo333 · 03/08/2025 19:53

They are all over the place , not sure what to do with them

Grape hyacinth tends to be one of those plants that, once you've got it, you've got it. You can reduce its spread somewhat by digging out regularly but you'll likely always have them.

menopausalmare · 04/08/2025 08:25

I rather like them, seems a shame to remove. However, the leaves do get scruffy and straggly after flowering.

cleo333 · 04/08/2025 14:10

Maybe I’ll leave them to see what the flowers are like , when do they flower ?

They're very pretty when they flower well, which happens in late winter. It's just they can get a bit much because they increase so fast they get overcrowded and stop flowering, so to keep them looking good you have to keep digging most of them out.
