What can I plant now that will keep growing?

I am not a gardener but I do like my garden to look nice. After various disruption thanks to my neighbour’s works, I have nothing of interest growing.

Is there anything I can plant now that will bloom and flourish and provide a quick fix? I have not much money, and I think the soil is fairly poor.

Thank you for any suggestions!

Hylotelephium / Sedum are coming into flower now as are Rudbeckias. Ornamental grasses have a long season of interest and look great in the Autumn and Winter.

Geraniums (pelargoniums) are in full flower now and will carry on for several more months. They aren't hardy but they are pretty cheap, so would be good as temporary fillers.

You can overwinter them indoors if you pot them up.
