What’s wrong with our tree

We removed a few branches late last year as they were over hanging onto the street. It now looks like this. Something we’ve done or is there another explanation?

All advice gratefully received. Thank you

Possibly drougt

It has been very hot, and dry, with occasional rain followed by sun. It's likely scorch. Trees also shed leaves in drought conditions

Drought.

Thank you. Do I give it a good drink now or leave it be? In Scotland so no hosepipe ban.

We're now getting intermittent rain in NW so it should be ok. It would need a lot of water, and that would be at least weekly, not as a one off

Yamadori · 20/07/2025 12:58

It's drought, yes. Maybe give it a good soak, a bathful should be about right, and the same again in a week's time unless you have prolonged heavy rain. Nothing you can do about the damaged leaves though, and the tree probably isn't going to produce many more this year as it will have sensed that the daylight hours have started to shorten.

It might also be worth checking the cut areas from where you pruned it last year to see whether they look like they have callused and are healing over, or have become diseased. Did you cut the branches back flush or leave a stub?

maldivemoment · 20/07/2025 13:06

Thank you @Yamadori. Hugely helpful.
Re cutting it back, we kind of just went at it with loppers and removed all the branches that were impacting the pavement. Didn’t really give it a lot of thought. Oh dear. Hope we’ve not caused irreparable damage.

I’m away out now to have a closer look…
