Bay sucker infestation

We have a large bay laurel in our garden that was there when we moved in. It’s next to our gazebo and this year we have noticed a lot of wasps. After googling I can see it’s swarming with bay suckers. The online information about dealing with this tends to assume a mild infestation or a small bush, but ours is very large and is covered in them. Is there anything we can do? The ladybirds are having a feast, but it’s too much for even them to munch through.

It's culinary bay, right?

So treat like you would any other tree - physically get the roots out. Dig, and when it gets impossible, use a saw. Do the same with any regrowth. If the original trunk is less than 6", and it was culinary bay, it should be fine with a couple spades. Portuguese laurel woukd be way worse.
