Ground covering that will beat out periwinkle

I have been digging the garden today taking out weeds and about 5 bucket loads (so far) of giant all encompassing periwinkle. I am looking for cheap ish options for what to put back in that will fill the space between the shrubs and work with bulbs and hopefully outcompete the periwinkle to keep it at bay as much as possible.

I know this will be ongoing work. I’m just looking to improve things a bit for future me and maybe add some colour!

Edit as pic wouldn’t upload

Vinca? Or is that similar to periwinkle. Also have you considered putting down bark to suppress the weeds?

We have hardy geraniums but I think it’s very similar to what you want rid of .

I could but I’d need a lot! Maybe I just need to accept it and pop some dotted about flowers among the shrubs 🤣

Are they low growing. I don’t mind spread. It’s the height and them entangling and smothering my other plants that is bothering me.

Vinca is periwinkle! You could try ajuga reptans, lamium maculatum, galium odoratum, epimedium, saxifraga x urbium.

Thanks for the ideas @Coffeeandcrochet
