Rockery help!

We've had loads of fantastic advice from the experts on here so here goes again!

We have a rockery type area at the front of our house. It's massively overgrown and the concrete steps in between are broken and cracked. We've no money to fix this properly and probably won't have for another 5-8 years. What can I do to make it better?

I've tried cutting everything back and weeding but the weeds grow by the minute as it's such a large area. Can't dig everything out (I don't think?) as the steps are lower and the bank might cave in.

I was thinking bark chips but not even sure we can afford that.

Just a bit stuck and hoping for ideas. Thank you so much!

To be honest? Chuck grass seed over most of it and use a strimmer to keep it reasonably neat.. Strimming will keep the weeds down too. There's no point in putting anything like bark chips down, because it will all get washed down the slope to the bottom by heavy rain. Just cultivate one corner of it for now, and gradually expand on it as time and energy permits.

Sorry pictures aren't uploading for me 🤦🏼‍♀️
Thank you - that makes total sense. It just looks terrible and as we're saving to renovate the house I was thinking it might be less depressing coming home and having the front look semi presentable.

Thanks so much 😊

Chuck on a wildflower seed mix? Wildlife friendly, flowers to cheer it up. It'll still look messy but at least fun messy!
