Is it best to mix with top soil or home made compost to avoid it feeling a bit crap /slimy? I get that we need to use it but don’t get on well with it… I’m hoping someone can advise..

Mine’s been absolutely fine (Miracle Gro), try a different brand next time? I think mixing top soil into compost for pots can be a good thing in that it stops the whole lot sinking down a bit as it compacts, but does risk bringing in weed seeds!

You can mix in some horticultural grit, sharp sand or perlite, which will open it up a bit. It shouldn't be slimy though. I'm wondering whether it got wet and was stored for a while before you bought it.
